GTI records 22 arrests, discontinues 65 unroadworthy minibuses

The Gauteng Transport Inspectorate (GTI), in collaboration with the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) and other law-enforcement agencies, continued to strengthen road safety and public transport regulatory compliance through targeted stop-and-search and high-impact enforcement operations across the province.

Conducted under the #RemoveSkorokoro campaign, the operations focused on high-risk public transport corridors, paying particular attention to vehicle roadworthiness, valid documentation, driver compliance and adherence to public transport regulations.

During the month of October 2026, GTI officers recorded one hundred and forty (140) minibus taxis operating without valid licence discs, whilst two hundred and fifty-five (255) were found operating without valid driving licences.

A further 65 minibuses were discontinued after being found to be unroadworthy and unsafe for use on public roads. These interventions are aimed at removing unsafe vehicles from the roads and protecting passengers and other road users.

To enhance compliance and accountability, officers issued three thousand, five hundred and thirty-two (3532) handwritten AARTO (Administrative Adjudication of Road Traffic Offences) infringement notices across the province.

These included over nine hundred (909) in Tshwane; eight hundred and seventy-two (872) in Ekurhuleni; one thousand, six hundred and seventy-four (1674) in Johannesburg; thirty-two (32) in Mogale City and three (03) in Sedibeng.

Twenty-eight (28) were recorded in Harrismith (Free State) and fourteen (14) in the North-West Province during the multi-disciplinary inter-provincial road safety and traffic enforcement operation across key municipal corridors and cross-border routes.

An additional three thousand, five hundred and eighty-five (3585) electronic infringement notices were processed through the Inspectorate’s e-Force devices.

These included one thousand, one hundred and eighteen (1118) in Tshwane, one thousand, six hundred and ninety-one (1691) in Johannesburg, seven hundred and five (705) in Ekurhuleni, thirty-six (36) in Sedibeng, eighteen (18) in Mogale City and seventeen (17) in Harrismith.

Operations also resulted in one hundred and thirty-two (132) discontinuation notices being issued, comprising twenty-four (24) in Tshwane, forty-five (45) in Ekurhuleni and sixty-three (63) in Johannesburg.

A total of twenty-two (22) arrests were made during the reporting period. These included sixteen (16) arrests for driving under the influence (DUI), two (02) for fraud, one for attempted bribery, one for possession of a stolen vehicle, one for interference and one for contravening immigration laws.

Gauteng MEC for Roads and Transport, Kedibone Diale-Tlabela, reiterated that the removal of unroadworthy vehicles and action against non-compliant drivers remain critical to protecting the lives of commuters and all road users.

She warned that operating public transport vehicles without valid discs and driving without driving licences undermine efforts to improve road safety, are a serious violation of law and place passengers and other road users at risk.

MEC Diale-Tlabela further emphasised that the enforcement operations will continue across the province, targeting non-compliant drivers and vehicles to enhance road safety and ensure strict adherence to traffic and public transport legislation ahead of the festive season.

Results for the month of October demonstrate the Department’s continued commitment to ensuring that public transport operators comply with the law and that unsafe vehicles are dealt with and removed from Gauteng’s roads.
