An SOS distress signal sent from a Garmin inReach satellite communicator sparked a swift mountain rescue response at the iconic Wolfberg Arch in the Cederberg on Friday, 23 October 2026.
Wilderness Search And Rescue (WSAR) teams were alerted to the emergency, with rescuers in the West Coast region immediately mobilised and the Western Cape Government Health and Wellness EMS / Air Mercy Service (AMS) rescue helicopter dispatched to assist.
Meanwhile, CapeNature rangers intercepted members of the hiking party and quickly established that a 48-year-old female hiker had slipped and fallen, sustaining injuries.
A responding Western Cape Government Health and Wellness EMS paramedic assessed and treated the injured hiker on scene before she was airlifted to Cape Town for further medical treatment.
For WSAR spokesperson David Nel, the incident highlights the enormous value of reliable emergency communication in remote wilderness areas.
"When you're hiking somewhere as remote as the Cederberg, getting a message out can be one of the biggest challenges in an emergency.
"Technology like the Garmin SA inReach is changing that. The ability to send an SOS via satellite, even where there's no cellphone reception, means rescue teams are alerted much sooner, reducing delays in getting medical care to someone really who needs it.
"It's another remarkable example of how technology is transforming mountain rescue, helping teams respond more efficiently, reducing delays and ultimately improving patient care."
The operation was concluded at 18h30 on Friday.
A special thank you to the responding rescuers, helicopter crew, paramedic and CapeNature rangers for their swift and coordinated response.
We wish the injured hiker a swift and full recovery.
When heading into remote areas, plan ahead, share your route, carry appropriate emergency communication equipment where possible, and make sure someone knows when to expect you home.
Being prepared isn't just about what you carry. It's also about making sure you can call for help when you need it.
