A young man was rescued from the Namahadi River near Lancaster after falling from the Namahadi River bridge

A young man in his twenties from Bolata Village in Qwaqwa, was rescued from the Namahadi River near Lancaster after falling from the Namahadi River bridge.

The rescue operation involved the Phuthaditjhaba Police Rescue and Diving Unit, Tactical Response Team members, off-duty police officers and the Maluti-a-Phofung Municipality Fire and Rescue Service.

On Saturday, 17 October 2026, at approximately 16:00, the Phuthaditjhaba Community Service Centre received a report of a person who had jumped from the Namahadi River bridge into the water.

The rescue teams were activated and promptly responded to the scene, where they found the young man motionless in the river. They managed to bring him safely to the riverbank, where it was discovered that he was unable to move. He was subsequently transported by ambulance to a local hospital for further medical treatment.

The young man, who identified himself as Thabo Sediadia from Bolata Village, reportedly told the rescue team that he had heard voices before the incident.

The Free State Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Thabang Lesia, commended the teamwork and cooperation between the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the Maluti-a-Phofung Municipality Fire and Rescue Service.

“I would like to express my appreciation for the continued cooperation and strong working relationship between SAPS and the Maluti-a-Phofung Municipality Fire and Rescue Service. Their swift response demonstrates their commitment to saving lives and serving our communities during emergencies.

“As we observe Mental Health Awareness Month in October, I urge parents, families and relatives to look after one another, particularly those who may be experiencing emotional or psychological distress. Life presents challenges, but we must stand

together, show compassion and support those who may be going through difficult times.
“We have also experienced incidents of children drowning in rivers amid hot weather conditions, as they seek relief by swimming. I urge parents and guardians to supervise children closely, keep them away from dangerous waterways and ensure that they are always safe. Let us work together to protect lives and prevent further tragedies,” said Lieutenant General Lesia.
