Head-on collision between a Volkswagen Caravelle school transport vehicle and a Mercedes-Benz truck on the R59 Road between Sasolburg and Vaalpark

The Sasolburg police are investigating a case of culpable homicide following a head-on collision between a Volkswagen Caravelle school transport vehicle and a Mercedes-Benz truck on the R59 Road between Sasolburg and Vaalpark.
It is alleged that on Thursday, 08 October 2026, at about 15:15, police received a complaint of culpable homicide. Upon arrival at the scene, police discovered that a Volkswagen Caravelle, which was traveling from Vaalpark towards Sasolburg, had collided head-on with a Mercedes-Benz truck travelling in the direction of Vereeniging.
Four people, an adult male aged 60 and three children aged between six and nine years, lost their lives in the accident.
The male driver of the Volkswagen Caravelle, one girl and two boys, were declared dead at the scene. Another boy was airlifted to a hospital in Alberton, while three other children who sustained serious injuries were transported to local hospitals for medical attention.
The driver of the truck survived the collision.
The circumstances surrounding the collision are still under investigation. A case of culpable homicide has been opened at Sasolburg Police Station
