N3 Toll Route | Traffic Advisory | 22 September 2026 — Busy traffic conditions expected from tomorrow as the Heritage Day long weekend and school holidays commence
Road users travelling on the N3 Toll Route during the coming days are urged to plan ahead, allow extra travel time, and remain patient and courteous, particularly when travelling through construction areas, where lane restrictions may be in place.
Traffic volumes are expected to increase from Wednesday, 23 September, as holidaymakers travel between Gauteng, Mpumalanga, the Free State, and KwaZulu-Natal.
The long weekend and school holidays may contribute to higher-than-normal traffic volumes and congestion on the N3 Toll Route.
Lane restrictions may cause delays
Motorists should expect ongoing construction-related lane restrictions along sections of the N3 Toll Route.
“Particular attention is drawn to ongoing construction activities between Heidelberg and Villiers, Warden and Harrismith, and Estcourt and Nottingham Road,” says Thania Dhoogra, chief operating officer of N3TC.
At least one lane in each direction will remain open to traffic, but increased traffic volumes may result in congestion and delays.
“Roadworks are necessary to maintain and upgrade this vital transport corridor, but we recognise that lane restrictions can cause disruption, congestion and delays, particularly during busy travel periods, and we apologize in advance for any inconvenience caused,” explains Ms Dhoogra.
“Motorists can also help by reducing speed, obeying temporary traffic signage, maintaining safe following distances and allowing other vehicles to merge safely. Patience and courtesy are particularly important when traffic is congested.”
Higher than usual northbound traffic volumes on Sunday, 27 September may also result in delays and backlogs in the construction areas near Hidcote and Mooi Toll Plaza, and in the vicinity of the Wilge and De Hoek Toll Plazas.
Prepare for changing spring weather
Weather conditions can change rapidly along the 415 km N3 Toll Route. Motorists may encounter rain, thunderstorms, strong winds, mist and, in high-lying areas, even snow.
Drivers should check weather and traffic conditions before departure, ensure their vehicles are roadworthy, pack emergency supplies, and adjust their speed to suit the prevailing conditions. Avoid fatigue and distractions by taking regular rest breaks, especially on longer journeys.
“Safe travel starts with preparation,” says Ms Dhoogra.
“Stay informed, remain alert, create space around your vehicle, and always be prepared for conditions to change. The safest journey is one where motorists give themselves enough opportunity to respond calmly to the unexpected.”
