Drug mule arrested at OR Tambo International with drugs suspected to be heroin of an estimated street value of more than R2 million

The South African Police Service (SAPS), with support from the Border Management Authority (BMA), has arrested another suspected drug mule at OR Tambo International Airport and seized drugs suspected to be heroin with an estimated street value of more than R2 million, following an intelligence-led operation.

The latest arrest brings the total number of suspected drug mules arrested at this port of entry to three in the past three weeks.

The 52-year-old South African national had just arrived on a flight from Accra, Ghana, when police intercepted him at the airport on Sunday, 20 September 2026.

A search of the suspect's luggage led police to uncover bullet-like objects and blocks containing substances suspected to be heroin.

The suspect is expected to appear before the Kempton Park Magistrates' Court later this week to face drug trafficking-related charges, while investigations remain ongoing.
