Minibus Taxi Crashes and Road Safety in Gauteng
Summary of Fatal Crashes Involving Minibus Taxis January 2013 to April 2016
There has been much concern by road users in South Africa pertaining to road crashes involving minibus taxis. The minibus taxi industry is an essential part of the transport system in South Africa.
Millions of commuters are transported daily by this mode of transport.
This is clearly evident from the latest vehicle population statistics. At the end of April 2016 there were 301,000 registered minibus taxis on our roads with 117,000 of these vehicles registered in Gauteng.
This is a rather complex industry requiring effective public private partnering to contribute towards making roads safer.
We would like to offer some insights to the threat to road safety and the urgent need for cooperation with the taxi industry to provide greater safety for the South African road user.

Taxi Related Fatal Crashes (2012 – April 2016)
- Almost the same number of pedestrians are killed as vehicle occupants.
- 85% of Pedestrians killed in taxi related crashes occurred in urban areas.
- 43% of Fatal NON-PEDESTRIAN Crashes occurred in Urban Areas, 25% on freeways and 32% on Main Arterials.
