Potholes and Vehicle Damage

Question

On the 24th December 2009 I was driving on the R50 between Leandra/Leslie and Standerton. I hit potholes most likely at the same spot mentioned by Amanda elsewhere on your website. The result was 4 burst tyres and 2 buckled and/or damaged rims. I had to leave my wife and 3 kids on the road for many hours and had a friend come all the way from Brakpan to transport me and the 4 wheels to Standerton to have the tyres replaced. I must add that while we were sitting on the side of the road, at least 10 other cars met the same fate in that area within 50m. The whole exercise has cost me more around R8000 which I had to pay from my pocket. I would like to claim compensation from the relevant authorities, I took photoes of the potholes and the damage to my car and also reported the incident to the Standerton Police Station. Could you please assist on what I need to do?

Answer

Any claims on the regional roads or "R" roads will have to be taken up with the municipality in the area where the damge has taken place.
