Suspension on vehicle

Question

What are the laws regarding lowered cars, police are using a "two finger" method to measure ride height between tyre and arch. Surely this cannot be an approved method! Secondly what lowering kits are legal? Lastly is a police officer allowed to take your license disk if he deems your car to be too low, or are there any steps he has to take first? What are my rights when they ask for my license disk?

Answer

Suspension units

No parts of a suspension must have any signs of been welded; heated or repaired.
There is no actual measurement between the tyre side wall and the inner of the fender / arch.
There must be enough clearance for expansion and movement on various road surfaces and load conditions.
At no stage is the wheels allowed to fowl any other parts of the vehicle.
A traffic officer can suspend a vehicle and remove the licence disc and issue notice to discontinue operation of
motor vehicle if he suspects a vehicle to be unroadworthy.
Lowering kits- there is so many after market vehicle components which we have no insight or information on. I suggest you speak
to the manufacturer/agents of your specific vehicle to see which components they approve and also to SABS in this regard.
