Metered Taxi Business

Question

Dear Expert, I want to begin a Metered Taxi Business in the Northern Suburbs - Western Cape. I want to start with initially five 4 Seater Vehicles but by the end of the year, I want to add an additional 5 Vehicles. I have the money to start up but do not kow who to contact to register the vehicles as metered taxi's. Who can I contact?

Answer

Taxis have to obtain operating licences from the Provincial Taxi Permit Boards. I am not sure of the direct number but the provincial administration could assist.
The contact details for public transport can be found off the Cape Gateway website (http://www.capegateway.gov.za/eng/your_gov/13575/contacts )

With regard to annual motor vehicle licence: When you apply for licensing of the vehicles you have to indicate the usage of the vehicle as “Persons for reward” on the application forms (either form ALV or RLV) downloadable from the eNaTIS website (www.enatis.com). Most dealers complete the forms on behalf of the buyers so be sure to indicate to the dealers where you buying the vehicles from that they will be used to ferry persons for reward.

Also note that these vehicles have to be roadworthied every year. The drivers must also be in possession of professional driving permit (PrDP) for category P-Persons.
