Noise levels of motor vehicles

Question

My question is on noise emmitions from motor vehicles. It is my understanding that a person can be fined for loud exhausts noise and loud music from motor vehicles. Is this law being enforced in South Africa? In our road alone we have at least 4 motor vehicles a day that do not adhere to these regulations and we live in a cul de sac. What can be done to reduce this occurance?

Answer

The Municipalities/Metro Police do have by-laws regarding noise (loud music and certain hours) with regard to enforcement you would
have to approach the Municipal Traffic Police/ Metro Police in your area.
Noise emitted form exhaust pipes/silences are not to exceed the limits prescribed in the code of practise SABS 0181.
The normal procedure is if an Officer comes across a vehicle which he suspects to be exceeding the noise limit, the vehicle will be suspended
and will have to be taken to a test centre to be tested.

I hope the above info answers you questions.
