Question

Please can you advise me – a friend and myself nearly came to blows about driving with your dim/park lights. I got my license about 30 years ago and was always under the (perhaps misguided) impression that park lights were used for parking and not for driving – this young man got his license 8 years ago and says that it is ok to drive with your park lights. I do try and keep up with all changes to the rules of the road but perhaps I missed this one. Last year I listened to a talk with Johan van Baagen, the local traffic guy on East Coast Radio and remember him saying that driving with park lights is an absolute no-no. Please – which is it?

Parking lights are for identifying a vehicle to other road users in bad lighting conditions whilst parked, or in instances where visibility may be restricted. At all other times, whilst in motion, and if in inclement weather (***r visibility), the dimmed main lights must be used - not parking lights.
