N3TC announces implementation of automated electronic Tag payment option on N3 Toll Route

Commencing this afternoon (Friday, 04 December 2015), N3 Toll Concession (N3TC), the company responsible for the 415km N3 Toll Route between Heidelberg in Gauteng and Cedara in KwaZulu-Natal, will implement an automated electronic Tag payment option in selected lanes at all its toll plazas.

Motorists have a payment choice on the N3 Toll Route

Automated Tag payment is an additonal and convenient toll payment method for motorists who have SANRAL Tags fitted in their vehicles. “Automated technology enhances the safety, convenience and mobility for N3TC customers who choose to make use of this payment method. We are pleased to provide this convenient payment option to road users in time for the busy December holiday period,” explains Andy Visser, N3TC Marketing Manager.

Road users who choose to make use of the Tag payment option should look out for the clearly signposted and demarcated orange lanes at all plazas along the N3 Toll Route.

“The orange lanes have been fitted with the appropriate technology that will automatically detect the Tag fitted in your vehicle and effect a toll transaction, provided the motorist has sufficient funds in his or her SANRAL Account,” explains Visser.

“However, if you have a valid Tag fitted in your vehicle, but choose NOT to make use of this payment method on the N3 Toll Route, you should avoid the orange lanes at the N3TC toll plazas, as the orange lanes automatically default to the Tag payment option,” advises Visser.

All other payment methods will continue to be accepted at plazas along the N3 Toll Route and all lanes will continue to be manned by toll collectors.

Payment options available on the Route include cash, valid credit and fleet cards for Class 1 (light) vehicles; and cash, fleet cards or Zimele RMS Toll Cards for Class 2 – 4 vehicles. Tags will be accepted for all vehicle classes, but currently only in the orange lanes.

Diners Club, American Express and all other International Cards are NOT accepted methods of payment for any class of vehicle.

Mastercard and Visa Credit Cards are ONLY accepted for Class 1 (Light) Vehicles; not for other vehicle classes.
Garage Cards are ONLY accepted for Class 1 (Light) Vehicles; not for other vehicle classes.

Toll fees on the N3 Toll Route will not change with the introduction of the automated payment method on Friday. “Fees are set and gazetted by the Minister of Transport and are annually adjusted, usually in March, in accordance the Consumer Price Index (CPI),” says Visser. “Furthermore, no additional toll plazas are planned on the existing N3 Toll Route between Heidelberg and Cedara.”

“N3TC is confident that ‘tagged’ customers will benefit from the convenience of this additional safe and cashless payment method. Offering this payment option to our customers is just another way in which we hope to add value on the N3 Toll Route,” ends Visser.

The automated Tag payment option will be available at the following mainline and ramp plazas on the N3 Toll Route:

  • De Hoek
  • Wilge
  • Tugela
  • Mooi River
  • Bergville Ramp Plaza
  • Tugela East Ramp Plaza
  • Mooi South Ramp Plaza
  • Mooi North Ramp Plaza
  • Mooi Treverton Ramp Plaza
