Suspect arrested for possession of an unlicensed firearm and possession of property suspected to be stolen

On Tuesday, 2 December Police in KwaZulu-Natal arrested a 35-year-old suspect in Verulam for being in possession of property suspected to be stolen and for being in possession of unlicensed firearms.
At about 11:00 on Tuesday, a vehicle tracking company picked a signal of a stolen vehicle as it was leaving uMlazi heading North on the N2. The chase ensued, and various police units also joined the pursuit. A security company attempted to stop the vehicle in Verulam. However, one of the occupants in the stolen vehicle fired shots with a rifle at the security guards and injured one guard on the leg. The suspects continued to flee, but they were eventually intercepted at Clerence Park by members of the Provincial Task Team as well as Durban K9. The suspects abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot into the bush.
A close inspection of the abandoned vehicle led to the recovery of one (1) rifle with over one hundred round (100) rounds of ammunition. Members from K9 went into the bush in search of the suspects. During the search, one suspect who was in possession of an AK47 assault rifle with sixty (60) rounds of ammunition was arrested.
The arrested suspect will be charged for possession of an unlisenced firearm and possession of property suspected to be stolen. He will appear at the Verulam Magistrate Court on Wednesday, 3 November 2025. Police are still searching for the second suspect.
