Arrive Alive

EThekwini Municipality is urging residents to remain vigilant

EThekwini Municipality is urging residents to remain vigilant as the South African Weather Service has issued a Level 4 severe thunderstorm warning for today, 2 December, lasting until midnight.

Forecasts indicate widespread showers and intense thunderstorms across most parts of KwaZulu-Natal, with conditions likely to include heavy downpours, excessive lightning, strong damaging winds, and hail.

These weather patterns pose a serious risk to life, property, and infrastructure.

The anticipated rainfall may lead to flooding on roads, bridges, and low-lying settlements, while poor visibility and slippery surfaces will make driving hazardous. Informal and mud-based structures are particularly vulnerable to damage.

Residents living in flood-prone areas are urged to take precautionary measures to protect themselves and their families.

Motorists are urged to exercise extreme caution, reduce speed, and maintain a safe following distance, as deteriorating road conditions and compromised visibility increase the risk of accidents.

The public is strongly advised to stay indoors where possible and avoid unnecessary travel. Under no circumstances should anyone attempt to cross swollen rivers or streams, especially where water levels exceed ankle height.

The Municipality’s Disaster Management Directorate and emergency services are on high alert and fully mobilised to respond swiftly to any incidents.

This warning remains subject to change as conditions evolve, and updates will be issued by the South African Weather Service.

EThekwini Municipality will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide timely communication to safeguard residents.

For emergencies, contact the City’s Disaster Management Centre on 031 361 0000.
