Bakwena reports reduced fatalities over 2025 Easter period

Bakwena Platinum Corridor Concessionaire (Pty) Ltd (Bakwena), is pleased to report a reduction in fatalities along its N1N4 route during the 2025 Easter period which saw 1 fatality over the Easter period and 1 fatality over the long weekend at the beginning of May.

This achievement is the result of sustained efforts to enhance road safety, bolstered by our collaboration with Motus and Renault South Africa, as well as Rexy Asset Management. These partnerships enabled Bakwena to strengthen its route surveillance and emergency response operations by deploying an additional six vehicles along the corridor. The enhanced fleet provided visible policing, crash response, and motorist assistance throughout the high-traffic period (16 April to 6 May).

Collectively these vehicles travelled 26 263km, played a key role in 45 roadblocks, assisted with 66 crashes, aided 77 stranded/broken down vehicles, conducted checks on 14 240 vehicles, 130 arrests (124 pedestrian & 6 for drunk driving) and issued 1 632 AARTO notices.

On the occasion of the announcement of the 2025 Easter Road Safety Statistics, Minister of Transport, Barbara Creecy, noted that 2025 had the lowest number of crashes and fatalities seen in the last three years.  This overall decrease was attributed to three factors: widespread and consistent law enforcement operations across all nine provinces; co-ordinated action by national, provincial and local government authorities; and significant partnerships between civil society and government which positively impacted on driver behaviour.

“Despite this remarkable achievement, our heartfelt condolences go out to the families who lost loved ones elsewhere during the Easter period,” said Solomon Kganyago, spokesperson for Bakwena. “We remain steadfast in our commitment to road safety and will continue working to maintain and improve on this positive outcome."Bakwena thanks the Department of Transport, law enforcement agencies, maintenance contractors, Motus and Renault South Africa, Rexy Asset Management and all road users for their collective efforts in promoting safer roads.

Bakwena remains committed to achieving and sustaining its goal of zero fatalities. Bakwena will continue to implement additional measures and road safety awareness along its route and within the surrounding communities throughout the year.
