Floods destroy houses and roads in Umlazi

KZN Legislature, Pietermaritzburg: Following heavy rains that wreaked havoc in Durban this morning, I have decided to wrap up my engagement in the legislature and be with distressed communities.

Our hearts are with Madondo family following the unfortunate death of their family member.

This is after the collapse of their house in P Section in Umlazi, Ward 85.

We have been informed by our roving team and local councillors that many people have been rushed to the local hospitals and clinics following the destruction of their homes.

Other affected areas in Umlazi include Chicago in AA Section, and J Section, Ward 78 near KwaMgaga High School. In these areas,  houses have been washed away, with community members left homeless.

In addition, our highly efficient team from the Road Traffic Inspectorate has recorded an increase in the number of crashes. Roads have been flooded and bridges destroyed.

Heavy rains and floods take place as we present budget speeches for both departments.

We singled out floods - destruction of houses and road networks—as the major challenge that require both departments to do more with limited resources.

The visit is scheduled as follows:

Time: 17h00 to 19h00

Venue: UMlazi P, Ward 85

Date: 25 April 2025

Ends

Issued by the MEC for Transport and Human Settlements
