Driver jailed for drunk driving in KZN
The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) welcomes the conviction of a motorists arrested on New Year’s Eve for drunk driving by National Traffic Police Unit during their deployment in KwaZulu Natal.
A Volkswagen driver was arrested in the Pietermaritzburg central business district after he recorded a breath alcohol reading that was more that three times the legal limit. Mr Mthunzi Dladla recorded a reading of 0.85mg per 1000ml of breath which is above the legal limit set at 0.24mg per 1000ml of breath.
He was found guilty on two charges relating to driving while under the influence of intoxicating liquor under Section 65 of the National Road Traffic Act 93/1996, and reckless or negligent driving.
Dladla who was arrested on Loop Street in Pietermaritzburg on December 30, 2023, was this week sentenced to three years direct imprisonment by the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate court or a R15000 fine, with the court issuing an order declaring him unfit to possess a firearm.
