MEC Morweng calls for probe in kingpin "Tiger" escape in Stilfontein

The MEC of Community Safety and Transport Management Wessels Morweng reiterates to the public that there will be an internal investigation with heavy consequences to police officials who aided the escapee, James Neo Tshoaeli in Stilfontein.

Commonly known as 'Tiger', Tshoaeli resurfaced from shaft 11 and escaped between the shaft and Stilfontein holding cells.

Tshoaeli who is described as the kingpin allegedly responsible for some deaths torture and assault that were taking place underground escaped from police custody on Monday, 20 January 2025. According to records, 'Tiger' was never booked into police cells like other illegal miners who were arrested with him after being resurfaced.

The MEC indicated that the officials will face appropriate punishment for their conduct in this matter.

“We have always been consistent and not in denial of the fact that some amongst our organization (South African Police Service), are not adhering to the principles and oath of office they took when they assumed responsibility as police officers.

This  is an open intelligency that, the police officers have assisted in the escape of Tshoaeli and up to so far this is  the only case that we have experienced since the commencement of the rescue operation.

Indeed it's an embarrassment to the state and those that are liable for this act of criminality they will absolutely face the consequences.Let me assure you the  officials who are involved in this matter will be stripped off their badges and face the full might of the law, as it is unacceptable to have criminals disguised as police officials”, said Morweng.

He further indicated that Operation Vala Umgodi is ongoing and that illegal mining is just a minor setback to the operation.
