ATNS signs MOU with Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA)

The Air Traffic and Navigation Services (ATNS) SOC Limited and the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on January 17, 2025, at the entity’s Head Office in Johannesburg, South Africa.

This innovative partnership aims to enhance the capability and capacity of Nigerian Air Navigation Service Provider’s personnel. ATNS will provide a range of training services for air traffic controllers (ATC) and air traffic engineering personnel (ATSEP), including, among others, billing and collection management and airspace design.

During the MOU signing ceremony, ATNS Board Chairman, Mr Zola Majavu, said the signing ceremony solidifies the diplomatic and socio-economic relations of South Africa and Nigeria. He said; “today, as we sign this MoU, we are not just formalising an agreement; we are laying the foundation for a future where African skies are safer, more efficient, and more interconnected.”

NAMA’s Director-Air Services, Mr John Tayo emphasised that collaboration and strategic partnerships are essential for sharing ideas, reducing risks, building relationships, and achieving common goals, especially in the aviation industry where safety is paramount. He stated, "We eagerly anticipate the opportunity to learn from global best practices in airspace management while simultaneously sharing our expertise, knowledge, and experiences. This collaboration will enable ATNS and NAMA to enhance the safety and efficiency of our African skies, ensuring that we fulfil our mandate with excellence."

The MOU clearly outlines the roles and responsibilities of both parties, including the scope, deliverables, and timelines, which will be implemented through a collaborative process to ensure clear expectations.

ATNS CEO Ms. Nozipho Mdawe highlighted that this partnership supports South Africa’s goal of regional integration and cooperation. She stated, “Additionally, this agreement aligns with the South African Government's objective of fostering robust trading relations with African states, including Nigeria. By leveraging this strategic partnership, both ATNS and NAMA aim to enhance airspace management capabilities, promoting safety, efficiency, and regional cooperation.”

The implementation of the MOU will take effect immediately.
