The Motor Vehicle Accident Fund and Assistance to Victims of Road Crashes

We decided to approach Gert Nel from Gert Nel Attorneys to gain some insights on the assistance that can be provided to the victims of road crashes immediately after a road crash.

How would you best describe the nature of and the objectives of the Motor Vehicle Accident Fund?

Many road crash victims require immediate financial relief for day-to-day expenses like paying for repairs to their vehicle, paying a lease, school fees etc.

MVA Fund enables road crash victims with immediate financial support subject to terms and conditions.

What have been the major challenges with only relying on the Road Accident Fund once you have been in a road accident?

  • Delays in payment and the claim process itself can run into 55 months or longer.
  • By the time the RAF pays the road crash victim will have little or no hope of financial rehabilitation.
  • MVA Fund steps up and assists with immediate relief.

How does this fund differ from the protection provided by a medical fund or conventional insurance products?

Subject to the terms and conditions (These can be found on their website) a pre-approved amount is immediately paid to the applicant; interest-free.

What are the financial challenges addressed by the MVA Fund? Which financial shortfalls can be addressed?

Immediate financial relief for of a pre-approved lump sum amount which may be used to address any immediate financial need.

When can someone apply and what is required?

  • Preferably as soon as possible (post-accident).
  • The application must be supported by enough information to prove a nexus and potential value of the claim.

How long before funding can be provided to the injured party or his/ her relatives?

Immediately subject to pre-approval by MVA Fund.
